“X-Men: New Mutants” just had a new start date in Germany: the film, which has already been postponed several times, will now be released on April 2, 2020. But how is “New Mutants” related? with “Dark Phoenix”?
“X-Men: Dark Phoenix” began on June 6, 2019. For the last time you can see how the company of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Jean Gray (Sophie Turner ) and company fight on screen. One last time? Won’t there be more “X-Men” movie after that? Yes, there are “New Mutants”, but this has nothing to do with the characters from the previous “X-Men” film series.
“X-Men: New Mutants” was planned when the Fox production studio was not yet part of Disney and the plan was to expand the well-known franchise (before the mutants probably get a reboot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe). To do this, you must introduce new characters and try different gender directions. So they shot “New Mutants,” a movie with, among others, “Game Of Thrones” star Maisie Williams, which was touted as a kind of horror movie: a group of teenagers are supposed to recover in a hospital, but doctors only have special powers. of children are interested and want to experiment with them. Together, the mutants try to escape from their prison …
“New mutants”: neither fish nor meat
“New Mutants” was filmed in September 2017 and the film will be released on April 2, 2020. This raises the legitimate question: Why did it take so long? Normally, there would be a maximum of one year between the end of filming and a theatrical release, and “New Mutants” should actually start on April 12, 2018.
But afterwards the production was already very turbulent and, for example, the manager of “X-Men”, Simon Kinberg, could not help the director Josh Boone as he should have done as a producer because he himself was involved in the staging of ” Dark Phoenix ”, the problems persisted even after the shooting ended. There was disagreement over whether the movie should go more toward fantasy or young adult horror. But since Stephen King’s “It” had just gone through the roof at the cinema, the studio settled on a bigger horror part and ordered a re-filming.
The stars themselves didn’t know what was going on
But then the actors and the director were already busy with other projects and nobody really found the time. And at some point the communication about the project fell asleep. In recent months, even the actors expressed concern about whether the movie would make it and wondered what was going on there. For example, Maisie Williams wondered when in an interview with Rolling Stone in early 2019 “to the hell” the movie should come out, and stated that his co-star Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”) had no idea what the state was like.
The theatrical release of “X-Men: New Mutants” was delayed more and more, at some point it was even said that the film might not even make it to theaters, but directly to a streaming service. No one seemed really interested in the movie’s release, not Fox or the Disney Mouse Company, which Fox had since taken over. In the home of the MCU, Disney, one should be eager to reinterpret the newly acquired Marvel characters with the X-Men as soon as possible according to their own standards and integrate them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe around the Avengers. The new teenage mutants no longer really fit the concept.
Movies? Streaming service? Cinema now!
But then in April 2019 a new US start date was announced at CinemaCon and the German date was also updated: In this country, “New Mutants” will now hit theaters on April 2, 2020. Well, what kind of movie is that going to be, in which, in addition to Williams and Heaton, we will also see Anya Taylor-Joy, Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga as young mutants?
We’ll have to be surprised, but it shouldn’t have much to do with the tone of the first trailer, which was released in October 2017. Because this trailer was cut in the direction of horror, after the studio settled on this genre, but “New Mutants” was shot as a young adult fantasy movie, and new footage has been made to turn everything accordingly in horror. has not happened yet.
So far, very complicated. Meanwhile, watch the end of the saga about Charles Xavier and Magneto in the movies; after all, the movie has already started.
