The computers have to be programmed and in this case also trained. After all, Alexa and the Google Assistant should be able to correctly interpret everything we say on our smart speakers and smartphones throughout the day. Employees often evaluate what the assistive software misunderstood to rule out errors in the future.

Speech inputs are analyzed, which is necessary for development.

Google currently checks about 0.2 percent of all voice inputs manually, but this must be done completely anonymously. An involved employee, in some cases employed by outside companies, cannot assign voice input to a specific Google account. The latter is sometimes still possible if sensitive voice data ends up on employee desks.

Sometimes there are also unauthorized recordings: “VRT NWS listened to more than a thousand excerpts, of which 153 were conversations that should never have been recorded and in which the command ‘Ok Google’ was clearly not given.

For me, the real scandal is the company commissioned by Google, whose employees pass this private data to third parties.

Voice recordings can be turned off or deleted in Google account.
