Carbon Mobile is a start-up from Berlin and wants to design and manufacture mobile and entertainment electronic devices made of carbon fiber. The first product they have presented now is the Carbon 1 MKII. The housing of the smartphone consists of the so-called monocoque construction, a carbon composite.
Lightweight, lighter, carbon
Thanks to the carbon shell used, the smartphone is significantly lighter than all common smartphones on the market. It only weighs 125 grams. The lightweight design is also made possible by the glass used in the Carbon 1 MKII screen. This is a super slim version of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6. The well-known display glass manufacturer worked with Carbon Mobile on the development. But not only the weight is unusual. At 6.3 millimeters thick, the smartphone is also thinner than most other smartphones on the market.
The Carbon 1 MKII’s design looks very industrial and timeless. Rather than flashy colors, Carbon Mobile relies on a square case with a typical carbon look for its first smartphone. Only the small dual camera on the back seems a bit lost. We searched in vain for a notch or hole for the front camera on the front. Instead, there are rather wide bezels above and below the 6-inch AMOLED display.
Carbon 1 MKII: technical data at a glance
The carbon smartphone’s specifications are more middle-class. The integrated MediaTek Helio P90 is a mid-range processor from 2018. It has 8 gigabytes of RAM available. The 128 gigabyte storage space can be expanded with a microSD card. Our data sheet shows you all the technical data of the smartphone:
MediaTek Helio P90
6 inches, 1,080 x 2,160 pixels
|random access memory||
5312 × 2988 (15.9 megapixels)
2.0 type C
Only a few details are known about the Carbon 1 MKII’s camera. The resolution is 20 megapixels on the front and 16 megapixels on the back. A second camera is available here for depth of field information. We search in vain for a camera with zoom or wide angle.
The battery has a 3,040 mAh capacity and should be enough for a full day, according to Carbon Mobile. It charges through the USB-C port.
The current Android 10 is used in the Carbon 1 MKII without its own user interface. The manufacturer promises to offer more versions of Android, as well as continuous security updates.
Who is the target group for the Carbon 1 MKII?
The Carbon 1 MKII is more of a smartphone concept than a real alternative to smartphones from well-known manufacturers. It’s exciting to see a smartphone on the market that uses a completely new material instead of the same mix of metal and glass. However, we cannot recommend buying the smartphone at the price of 799 euros. You have to be an extreme carbon fanatic to forgo features like a good camera or long battery life for the special case.
Fans can now reserve the smartphone. They should be delivered to smartphones in the summer of 2020.
If you want to equip your smartphone with the stylish carbon look, we can recommend Rhinoshield Carbon Cases. They are available for numerous smartphones and also offer the feel and look of lightweight material.
