Cholestasis of Pregnancy: What Can the Doctor Do?
During pregnancy there are no therapeutic options to re-regulate the flow of bile. The only thing your doctor can do is prescribe something for the itching. Antihistamine ointments and tablets can provide some relief.
The good news is that after delivery, your hormonal balance will quickly stabilize again and liver values will normalize. Cholestasis of pregnancy goes away on its own. Of course, your doctor will re-check your blood values during follow-up exams after delivery.
Unfortunately, the chances of having cholestasis of pregnancy again the next time you give birth are quite high. Between 40 and 60 percent of all pregnant women struggle with the excruciating itch again.
