This era of the auto industry is wild. Electrification continues to grow at the expense of large displacement engines and traditional technology. Autonomous technologies are promising, but the reality is that their research and development costs an incredible amount of money. That leaves automakers like the Volkswagen Group in little trouble as it juggles a portfolio of luxury brands that may not lose weight.
If the rumors reported by Automobile Week on Sunday are true, the worst case scenario for Bentley, a sale, is not in sight. Instead, the British luxury brand will take control of Audi, allowing the two to more easily share technology to save costs in the long run. When it comes to car electrification at Bentley, the brand ruled that we shouldn’t wait. A collaboration with Audi could speed up the schedule, as Audi has taken a leadership role within the VW Group in electrifying the automaker’s luxury brands.

While that could prevent trouble with Bentley, there is another Italian cop in the room complicating matters: Lamborghini. The company is not exactly known for electric cars, but for large V10 engines with a different design. According to Reuters, the division may be on the way to a public spin-off, much like Fiat Chrysler dealt with Ferrari. With more independence through a spin-off, this could be a win-win situation. Lamborghini as an independent entity would not hurt VW’s electrification goals as much, but VW is likely to remain a large shareholder in any Lamborghini public company.
The VW Group did not immediately respond to Roadshow’s request for comment on the potential crashes reported.
These plans were likely in one form or another before the coronavirus pandemic. We continue to hear rumors about possible sales from the VW division, including Bentley and Lamborghini. And remember, there’s even more overlap when you add Bugatti, which is also subject to its own sale rumors.
