If you take a look at what is happening in international aviation these days, one thing cannot be overlooked: amid the Corona crisis in many regions of the world, planes are only in the sky in an emergency. This is clear, for example, in Europe, where only a fraction of planned flights take place. Several airlines such as Austrian Airlines or Polish LOT have temporarily stopped their flight operations completely, Lufthansa only has a special flight schedule to bring people stranded abroad back home. And now Eurowings is also pressing the emergency button. Flight operations will be kept to a minimum.
Eurowings goes into emergency operation
As of Wednesday (March 25), own activities will no longer focus on transporting people abroad. Rather, it is now important to bring tourists back home from abroad. For this reason, only a kind of basic service is offered at Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Stuttgart airports. Eurowings is temporarily reducing the flight capacity offered to around ten percent of the originally planned capacity.
The two airline companies Germanwings and Eurowings Europe, which fly on behalf of Eurowings, are grounding their aircraft with immediate effect. The reason is entry bans and curfews in many European countries. The airline is radically reducing Eurowings Germany’s flight hours. As of Wednesday, only some German domestic flights and connections to selected European cities will start from the four German airports mentioned.
Return flights continue to take off
Additionally, Eurowings aircraft take off as roundtrip flights from major holiday regions. According to its own information, the Lufthansa subsidiary has already carried out more than 100 special flights of this type and has transported some 20,000 passengers home.
Flight cancellations will be successively implemented in the reservation systems and affected passengers will be informed about changes and reservation change options with immediate effect. Eurowings did not announce how long the reduced flight offer is valid. This depends on the further development of the crisis of the crown. According to the airline, the measures are intended to reduce the financial consequences of a drop in demand. Several tour operators have also temporarily canceled their trips.
