Ford Explorer: plug-in hybrid for people on a budget

The basic equipment of the off-road vehicle with plug-in hybrid technology and space for up to seven people is quite impressive. Because the sixth generation of the bestseller reaches customers with a combined system power of 336 kW / 457 hp. A V6 gasoline engine is combined with an electric motor. The maximum torque is 825 Newton meters. And the fully electric range is 48 kilometers in optimal conditions, promises the manufacturer.

With enough traction, Ford promises driving exclusively through the 20-inch rear wheels. If necessary, the transmission automatically transfers engine power to the front wheels. Standard descent control makes it easy to overcome difficult slopes. To be well prepared for every trip on any surface and in any weather, Ford has also integrated seven driving modes: Normal, Sport, Unpaved Road, Slippery, Cargo / Tow and Eco. Anyone traveling off-road can also select driving mode for sand or deep snow.

The factory not only has a B&O sound system with 780 watts and twelve speakers, including an on-board subwoofer of the hybrid car five meters long and two meters wide, but also a 10-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive and a large number of modern assistance systems. The maximum speed is 230 km / h, an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is possible in 6.0 seconds according to the manufacturer.

New Ford Explorer: It’s Inside

Inside, a 12.3-inch screen can be used on the instrument panel. An 8-inch touchscreen is also available to operate the built-in DAB + radio. A 2-zone automatic air conditioning and black leather upholstery are also part of the equipment. Smartphones can also receive new energy wirelessly through the Qi charging station. The leather steering wheel with paddle shifters gets hot. Both front seats can also be heated and air-conditioned on warm days. They also have a lumbar support. The series also includes a panoramic moonroof. But don’t worry, unlike in Jurassic Park, the next dinosaur doesn’t lurk around the next corner.

This feature is free for two years. Afterwards, it is possible to continue using it for a fee at the request of the driver. Additionally, up to ten devices can access the Internet via a WLAN access point for an additional charge. For this, the Vodafone mobile network is used. There are several data packages available.

Assistance systems that can be used include a parking assist with park and exit functions, including partially automated vehicle guidance, and an adaptive cruise control system with traffic sign recognition and traffic jam assist that includes the Stop & Go function. According to Ford, a pre-collision assistant is capable of recognizing obstacles such as pedestrians or cyclists. A blind spot assistant is also on board from the factory.

How much does the new Ford Explorer cost as a plug-in hybrid?

The fact that the new Ford Explorer costs at least 74,000 euros according to the list price when it is launched on the German market is due, among other things, to the fact that it is only available in the starter ST-Line equipment version. The basic color is liquid white, seven other colors available cost between 1,000 and 1,300 euros extra.
