There are new provisions for so-called number portability, which should now cost less than 7 euros. That makes changing rates more attractive.
The first mobile phone providers had reacted before and voluntarily lowered prices to take the phone number. The Federal Network Agency now has a general decree for all mobile phone providers. Consumers, in particular, benefit from reduced costs. The Federal Network Agency is very proud of that. Now, with immediate effect, other mobile phone providers are being asked to adjust their requirements in the form of transfer fees to a maximum of 6.82 EUR.
Number portability is much cheaper
Effective today, the Federal Network Agency has ordered mobile phone providers freenet, 1 & 1 Drillisch, 1 & 1 Telecom, and Telefónica to charge portability fees of EUR 6.82 (gross). Previously charged fees of around 30 euros were banned. The vast majority of market participants have voluntarily agreed to lower the transfer fees of their end customers to the threshold of € 6.82 (gross) specified by the Federal Network Agency with effect from April 20, 2020.
We have significantly reduced the hurdles when switching mobile phone providers. This promotes competition and consumers benefit from it. As of today, a maximum of 6.82 euros can be charged for portability, before it used to be around 30 euros, “says Jochen Homann, president of the Federal Network Agency.
