Galaxy Z Flip: Samsung’s folding disaster repeats itself

Last year, folding smartphones were called a trend that developed slowly in 2019. In addition to the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, there are now other devices that can be folded. Samsung recently introduced the Galaxy Z Flip, Motorola also has such a device in its range with Razr and Royole with FlexPai. But even a year later, the question continues to arise: are folding smartphones fully developed for everyday use?

Everything should improve with the Galaxy Z Flip. Last year, the Galaxy Fold made mostly negative news. Samsung initially made the device available to only a few journalists for testing; but that was enough to show how fast the folding smartphone breaks. The screen film peeled off in no time and the hinges didn’t cut well either.

Then the South Korean manufacturer brought an improved version of the smartphone to the IFA in September 2019. The foil was now better attached and the hinges more flexible. For a high price of 2,100 euros, it is still not a device for daily use.

With the brand new Galaxy Z Flip, misery now repeats itself. Unlike the Fold, the Z Flip can be folded in half like an old folding phone. Instead of the size of a tablet, the new Samsung device now offers a smartphone in the classic narrow format. Still, the Galaxy Z Flip is apparently no more stable. The first reports are coming in where users complain of broken screens.

Galaxy Z Flip with screen break

On Twitter, for example, a user reports that the smartphone screen broke in the fold immediately after opening it for the first time. Coincidence? At that time, a protective film was attached to the fold, which could not be removed. This is not the case with the Galaxy Z Flip, it comes with a typical protective film that is irrelevant to the stability of the screen.

Samsung announced the new foldable smartphone with ultra-thin and flexible glass, but its indestructibility was questioned from the start. Compared to The Verge magazine, Samsung warned in a statement to be careful and handle the Galaxy Z Flip with care.

If you bought the folding model and registered with Samsung within the first thirty days, you could repair the screen for a one-time fee of 109 euros.

Galaxy Z Flip in the video

The Galaxy Z Flip did a slightly better figure on JerryRigEverything. The YouTuber who mistreats smartphones with knives, fire, and flex tests does not break the hinge itself. In return, the glass breaks on the outside and the screen scratches pretty quickly.

Motorola Razr is struggling with issues

It looks similar with the Motorola Razr. Technology page Input reports a few days after publishers tested the Razr that the screen gave up. Thick bubbles formed in the plastic frame causing the screen to peel off. The inlet suspects a low-temperature connection. The Twitter user, whose Galaxy Z Flip broke, also made an initial connection to the cold outside temperatures.
