Ridley Scott has long been known to want to make a sequel to his landmark epic “Gladiator.” But now the producers have confirmed that the movie will actually be made. And it’s even supposed to be Ridley Scott’s next project.
The idea for a “Gladiator” sequel has been circulating in Hollywood for many years. But what seemed like a bad joke for a long time – after all, main hero Maximus (Russell Crowe) died a heroic death at the end of the film – has become increasingly concrete in the past two years. First, director Ridley Scott said he wanted to continue his 2001 Oscar-winning epic in person, In late 2018, Studio Paramount officially hired a screenwriter for Peter Craig (“The Hunger Games – Mockingjay: Part 1 + 2”).
And now producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald became “Men In Black: International” during the press tour. HeyUGuys asked again about the project – and confirmed that “Gladiator 2” is in the making. They also revealed a previously unknown detail about the plot.
This is what “Gladiator 2” is all about
As was already known, the son of the imperial sister Lucilla (in the first part: Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of the power-hungry Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) should be the focus of the sequel. Maximus is said to have left a lasting impression on him, so the glorious gladiator should always be present in the film, even if he is not physically present.
Regardless, the producers have now revealed when “Gladiator 2” will be played: “The story continues 30 years … 25 years later”says Parkes. The first part takes place in the year 180 after the birth of Christ, the continuation with it sometime between 205 and 210. The eleven-year-old Lucius in the original film will be around 40 years old and therefore probably as old as Maximus before.
It is currently still unclear if, as in the first part, Spencer Treat Clark will play the lead role of Lucius. An application video for this could have been his appearance in “Glass” by M. Night Shyamalan, where he again played the son of Bruce Willis, whom he played as a child in “Unbreakable” from 2000, that is, in the same year that “Gladiator” Appeared, incarnate.
And when will “Gladiator 2” arrive?
It’s also unclear when we can expect “Gladiator 2”. But it probably won’t take long: The monumental sequel to the film is said to be Ridley Scott’s next project after he has finished the television series “Raised By Wolves,” which he is currently directing for US broadcaster TNT. (via Indiewire). It is not yet known when the sci-fi show with Travis Fimmel (“Vikings”) will appear, but Ridley Scott is known for his speed at work; among other things, he has provided “Exodus: Gods and Kings” in recent years. (2014) and “Der Martianer” (2015) two completely different large-scale productions in a short period of time, in 2017 with “Alien: Covenant” and “Alles Geld der Welt” two films directed by Scott were released in one year .
As the director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner” does not get any younger at 81 years old and in addition to “Gladiator 2” there are other projects as a director (“Battle Of Britain”, “Queen & Country”) and especially as producer (including “Death on the Nile”) in the pipeline is It’s hard to imagine the “gladiators” sequel taking to the long run.
By the way, it is not completely out of the question that Russell Crowe is also seen again as Maximus. At least Scott has suggested before that he has an idea how to do this:
