Google lured with free services, now we should pay

Shopping: selling on Google is now free

In hindsight, Google has had a very smart strategy in recent years, because the company has repeatedly advertised itself with free products. Profits from other areas, such as advertising, have been invested in online services and cloud farms to attract users with great free products. Meanwhile, Google is slashing its free offerings, and a paid subscription has to be paid for earlier and earlier for Google’s cloud storage.

In the past, not only was there more free storage for Gmail, photos, and the like, but some special offers were much more generous as well. Today is different. Google no longer offers unlimited cloud photo storage for buyers of its Pixel smartphones and the optional subscription to Google One is only free for three months. Likewise, the 100GB cloud storage offered for Chromebooks should be free for less.

Google wants to make money and the need among users is growing

I used to get by with a few gigabytes in the cloud. I didn’t need much for Drive and Gmail, I saved my photos in high quality to Google Photos for free. But my requirements have changed, the need for cloud storage has increased recently. I have been subscribed to Google One for a while. Google had already speculated on this and other similar user scenarios a few years ago.

You first attract users with free services, then link them to long-term smart innovations, and then turn them into paying customers. The latter is also possible due to the low prices, for only 1.99 euros per month there are already 100 GB in the Google cloud. 200 GB are available for 2.99 euros per month or 29.99 euros per year.

So in recent years, Google has paved the way for making new money in other ways besides online advertising.
