In mid-May 2019, the Chinese company Huawei was blacklisted by the US government. Since then, US corporations can no longer work with Huawei. For this reason, Huawei and its subsidiary Honor can no longer equip their new smartphones with the PlayStore and other services such as Google Maps. The internal AppGallery also has many gaps in the applications used in Germany.
Google requests permission
In order to be able to work with Huawei again, Google has now requested an exemption from the US government, and it is currently unclear if it will be approved. There is also no information on when the decision on the application should be made.
Microsoft already succeeded
Microsoft was successful with such an app in November 2019. Since then, the group has been able to sell Windows licenses to Huawei again. Huawei had previously considered bringing its Linux-powered MateBooks to market. MateBook D and MateBook X Pro, which were recently introduced this week, are back in Microsoft’s system.
Does Huawei want to recover PlayStore?
Meanwhile, Huawei has stepped up its work on Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) as an alternative to Google Mobile Services. Huawei’s AppGallery should be a real alternative to the PlayStore and applications like Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube should also be in development.
So it is questionable whether Huawei would like to revert to reliance on US companies, at least in the long term. However, in the short term, it could help Huawei’s sales figures in Europe. In China, on the other hand, the PlayStore is not relevant anyway. Chinese users have been getting their apps from Huawei’s AppGallery for years.
