Last year, Huawei presented its first folding smartphone, the Mate X, at the MWC fair in Barcelona. However, the market launch of the smartphone was postponed several times, and ultimately the smartphone was only available in China. Now the Mate Xs has been introduced. The revised successor should launch worldwide in March.
Revised hardware
At first glance, the Mate Xs is no different from the “old” Mate X. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the 8-inch screen is still on the outside, which means that when folded, it’s just half the big screen. instead of an additional screen. used. This means that a 6.6-inch screen is also available when folded.
According to Huawei, the folding mechanism has also been optimized. In addition to the revised materials, the most notable change is a new red button on the case. You have to press this to unfold the Mate X. When folded, the smartphone screen locks in place to prevent dirt from getting in. A video had already appeared in October 2019 showing an unpacking of the Mate Xs.
New processor with 5G integrated
The technical data of the Huawei Mate Xs has also been reviewed: the built-in Kirin 990 octa-core processor, unveiled at IFA last fall, offers an integrated 5G modem and, together with the 8 gigabytes of built-in RAM, it should provide a lot of performance. . The storage space is also generously sized at 512 gigabytes and can be expanded with an NM card.
The battery has a capacity of 4,500 mAh and can be charged with 55 watts. This enables the Mate X to be supplied with new energy from 0 to 85 percent in 35 minutes.

Identical camera
The camera was not changed. The same sensors are located on the back of the Mate X as on the Mate X.
The cameras at a glance:
- 40 megapixel main camera with f / 1.8
- 16 megapixel wide-angle camera with f / 2.2
- 8 megapixel zoom camera with f / 2.4
- 3D depth sensor
There is no front camera. Here you can simply use the main camera in the folded state. If desired, the person being photographed can also view the live image using the mirror shooting function and adjust their facial expression accordingly.
Software with many changes but without PlayStore
According to the company, a lot of work has been done on the Mate Xs software. The latest version of Android 10 is installed alongside Huawei’s EMUI user interface. This now supports Multi-Window with two applications running in parallel on each half of the screen. You can open a third application in a window over the other two. Text, images, and documents can be dragged back and forth between applications using drag-and-drop.
Important: As with all new Huawei smartphones, the Google PlayStore is no longer available. In its place comes Huawei’s AppGallery, which of course doesn’t have as many apps as Google’s app library. A dilemma Microsoft once failed with Windows Phone.
The Huawei Mate Xs will be available from mid-March for a price of – expect – 2,499 euros. A folding protective sleeve is included.
