In 2018 you can enter a third gender in your passport

The decision has finally been made: this week, the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe decided that from 2018 there should be a new regulation regarding gender information in passports. Then it will be possible to choose another option besides male and female, which concerns intersex people. The reason for this is the fact that “It violates the general right to the personality of people if they are neither men nor women and their gender entry remains open”, explains the Federal Minister of Family Affairs, Katharina Barley. Therefore, you should not be forced to assign yourself to one of the two genders. This violates the prohibition of discrimination and consequently also against personal rights.

Intersex: what does it mean?

Intersex cannot be equated in any way with transsexuality. Transsexual people are born with a different biological gender, but they do not feel comfortable in it and therefore choose the other. The gender characteristics of intersex people, on the other hand, cannot be clearly assigned. Come with them at the same time feminine and masculine characteristics before, such as chromosomes, hormones, or external genitalia. According to experts, there are more than 60 different types of intersex. For example, it may happen that the body produces male hormones, so the person looks like a boy, but was born with female genitalia. This form is the most common variant of intersex. The call Adrenogenital syndrome (AGS) occurs in 1 in 10,000 babies.
