The wait is finally over: this Thursday, “Star Wars 7” opens in theaters, and Lupita Nyong’o is right in the middle. The “12 Years a Slave” star is particularly happy about the positive effect that her role as alien pirate ‘Maz Kantana’ has on her acting skills.
For “Star Wars 7,” Lupita Nyong’o took on the role of a CGI character for the first time, for which she had to wear a motion capture suit. Truly a completely new challenge for the Oscar winner, who, however, had at her side a true expert in the king of this discipline: ‘Gollum’ actor Andy Serkis. And he gave him a lot of valuable advice, which the 32-year-old has already been able to implement.
“The advice he gave me was, ‘Create this character like any other role,'” Lupita Nyong’o said in an interview with USA Today. A computer-formed character can only come to life if you consciously perform their actions and movements: “When playing a motion capture character, every decision is important. At the end of the day, it is a completely different living being that lives these decisions. The result of these findings on the set of “Star Wars 7”? You have developed a completely new body awareness and now you also know how to use it to tell stories. “Being able to go back to the theater, where you can use your own body to tell a story, was so precious,” Lupita Nyong’o enthused.
Lupita loves “Star Wars 7”!
For the beauty who grew up in Kenya, not only embodying a CGI character is something completely new, “Star Wars 7” itself was a completely new experience for her. Lupita Nyong’o is known, in addition to “12 Years a Slave,” especially for her work in the theater and in independent productions. However, you can also get excited about the franchise that you have known from your own childhood and youth: “I am very excited and full of love for this odyssey.”
And we too can barely support ourselves and would like to swap the office chair for the cinema chair right away.
