Huawei confirmed to news agencies this week that after careful consideration, the update to Android 8 Oreo for the Huawei P9 is out of the question. The more expensive P9 Plus is automatically affected too, as this device has the same Kirin 955 SoC (motherboard + processor) under the hood. Huawei justified the decision with the fact that the hardware could not support the newer version of Android due to its age. The following was reported:

Huawei has always attached great importance to an exceptional user experience. In order to continue to provide an optimal user experience for the Huawei P9, the device will not receive an Android Oreo update in Europe, so the high performance of the device can still be guaranteed.

In my opinion, it suffers from the fact that the SoC always lags a bit behind the competition in its own development. Devices with Qualcomm SoC from the same period receive the Oreo update. We addressed this point for the last time in our review.

In fact, we could expect more from Hauwei in particular, because the basis of the devices comes from Huawei’s subsidiary HiSilicon, that is, internally. It has now been tested for many months and in the end received a sadly somewhat disappointing result.

For us, the announced update for the similarly equipped Honor 8 is again under close scrutiny.
