“This day marks the beginning of a new era,” says Porsche boss Oliver Blume with conviction. Because the four-door Porsche Taycan should provide typical Porsche performance despite the electric drive. The developers incorporated a lot of innovative technology for this.
Porsche Taycan Turbo and Turbo S can now be reserved
The first two models are called the Taycan Turbo (500 kW / 680 PS) and Taycan Turbo S. They are also said to be the two most expensive electric cars from Porsche at the moment. They can be ordered immediately. Less powerful versions of the all-wheel drive will follow this year, the manufacturer promises. The Taycan Cross Turismo will continue in late 2020.
From a standstill, the Taycan Turbo S accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.8 seconds. The slightly weaker Taycan Turbo achieves this sprint in 3.2 seconds. The range according to the WLTP standard is 412 kilometers for the Turbo S and up to 450 kilometers for the Turbo. If you max out the top speed of 260 km / h, you will of course get significantly less. There are a total of four driving modes available: “Range”, “Normal”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus”. In “Individual” mode, individual systems can also be configured as required.
More tension for faster charging
Special feature: The Porsche Taycan comes with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. In a good five minutes, the energy for a range of up to 100 kilometers can be recharged with direct current (DC) in the fast charging network. Charging time from 5 to 80 percent of battery charge is approximately 22 minutes under ideal conditions, maximum charging power is 270 kW. The total capacity of Performance Battery Plus is 93.4 kW. At home, Taycan drivers can charge their cars with up to 11 kW of alternating current.
In terms of design, the Porsche Taycan looks particularly wide and flat from the front, with heavily curved fenders. The roof line descends towards the rear and thus conveys a sporty character. At the rear, a glass-like Porsche logo is integrated into a light strip.
Touch instead of spin
Inside, a 10.9-inch central infotainment screen is used. There is an optional additional screen for the front passenger. According to Porsche, all of the Taycan’s user interfaces have been completely redesigned and the number of classic hardware controls has been significantly reduced. Instead, Porsche relies on touch control surfaces and voice control (“Hey Porsche”).
And then of course there would be a look at the disk. The Porsche Taycan Turbo and Turbo S have two electric motors on the front and rear axles. Porsche specifies the possible recovery power of up to 265 kW, significantly higher than the competition. About 90 percent of daily braking should be done with electric motors alone, without additional activation of the hydraulic wheel brakes.
How much does the Porsche Taycan cost?
The Stuttgart company has also revealed a price for the new electric car. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S costs 185,456 euros, the Taycan Turbo costs 152,136 euros according to the list price. By the way: According to its own statements, Porsche will invest more than six billion euros in electric mobility by 2022.
