Samsung Galaxy S20 at Stiftung Warentest: sensational battery life, but ...

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is Samsung’s new flagship in the smartphone market. In our test it was already noticed that the Koreans are simultaneously outperforming the S20 and S20 + with the new Ultra version. Both models still belong to the upper class. The ultra variant, however, is the ultimate.

Stiftung Warentest sees it very similarly. At least when it comes to the telephoto camera, the Galaxy S20 Ultra has the upper hand. Otherwise, according to testers, the S20 Ultra’s higher-priced camera gear rarely yields better results.

Galaxy S20 vs. S20 Ultra: hardly any differences in practice

As for the rest of the technology, the testers hardly noticed any differences between the individual models. “The 5G variants are equipped with twelve gigabytes of RAM. Its possible added value did not lead to significantly better results in our practical tests, ”says Stiftung Warentest. However, in terms of battery life, the results are very different. But more on this in a moment.

Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra in comparison

Stiftung Warentest breaks the Galaxy S20 Ultra

In another test, consumer protection testers subjected the Galaxy S20 Ultra and its two weaker sister models to a drop test. All three smartphones were placed on a drop drum, which simulated drops from a height of 80 centimeters. In all, cell phones fell 100 times from this height onto a stone floor.

The penalty is immediate: after the drop test, the S20 Ultra and S20 + showed cracks and cracks on both the screens and the back. The corners were also badly damaged in some places. Only the smallest model, the Galaxy S20, passed the test with just a few scratches. At least: the S20 + and S20 Ultra were still working after the drop test.

The battery life of the S20 series

Stiftung Warentest didn’t just take a close look at the camera and the stability of the glass cover. The battery life of the Galaxy S20 models has also been examined. The results: “decent”. The Galaxy S20 Ultra lasted around 35 hours. The S20 + and S20 managed to last 30 hours.

If you compare these numbers to last year’s test winner, the Galaxy S10 +, Samsung has apparently turned the right screws. Last year’s top model arrived in the same test with a 32.5-hour battery life.

Surprise: worst German Galaxy S20 models

However, consumer protection also provided another surprise. They wanted to publish the test of the new Samsung flagship series as quickly as possible. That is why the American S20 series models were initially used for battery testing. And these lasted much longer. The Galaxy S20 Ultra with a Snapdragon processor had a runtime of 40 hours, 5 hours longer than the version available in this country with Exynos CPUs. The S20 and S20 + were every 2 hours more.
