Smart EQ fortwo / EQ forfour: first details on the new urban electric vehicle

Smart fortwo edition one

The fact that the Smart exists as a purely electric car is nothing new. Because in all generations of city cars until now there has also been an all-electric option. But now, with the new generation of 2019, the Smart is only available as an electric car. Emission-free and battery-powered electric drive technology.

Smart EQ fortwo and EQ forfour can be clearly distinguished

For the first time, the front of the new Smart electric models differentiates between fortwo and forfour. The four-seater has an “A-shape” that opens at the bottom with optional integrated fog lamps. The fortwo, on the other hand, has the familiar and friendly face. Another new feature is that the front section is again adorned with Smart lettering instead of a comparatively smooth logo.

In addition, the front grills are painted the same color as the vehicle for the first time and no longer contrast. Full LEDs are now used in the front, while hundreds of elaborately arranged LED lighting elements form the outline of the fixture with an effect of depth at the rear.

Inside, the smart fortwo and smart forfour 2019 want to mark with a redesigned center console. Instead of a hidden drawer on the side, there is now a large storage compartment in front of the selector lever that can be closed with a roller blind. The manufacturer promises that there is also room for the largest smartphones or two cups of coffee.

The connection of the media system is also much higher in the new smart generation. The touch screen now measures 8 inches and reflects all the applications stored in the smartphone on the car screen. With the EX smart control app, it is also possible to check the status of the vehicle while in motion. For example, to check the range or charge level of the vehicle’s battery. The vehicle can also be heated or cooled using the app.

In addition to the basic model, there are three equipment lines available for the fortwo and forfour: passion, pulse and prime. Each line can be combined with one of three equipment packages. Even the smallest package, “Advanced”, includes the new multimedia system and smartphone integration, an armrest and an acoustic parking aid. The premium package includes a panoramic roof and, for the fortwo cabrio, a wind deflector. A reversing camera is also available. The most expensive exclusive package includes rain and light sensors, among other things. In addition, fog lamps with a turn signal function and interior ambient lighting, as well as an interior mirror with automatic dimming.

And the car trip? Here Daimler relies on 160 Nm torque and 60 kW / 82 PS power for the new Smart. However, the range is very manageable. The new smart generation can only travel up to 159 kilometers on electric power alone. Sufficient for urban traffic, also for regional excursions, but not for longer distances. Energy can be recovered automatically when braking through recovery.

Charging can be done, for example, using an optional integrated charger (22 kW) with fast charge function. The car can be charged from 10 to 80 percent of the maximum possible range in less than 40 minutes, the manufacturer promises. It does not depend on DC charging stations. Suitable charging stations can be found using the EQ smart control app. On a classic 230V plug, the car recharges an average daily mileage in a good 3.5 hours.
