Where should you store breast milk?
What to do with expressed breast milk: refrigerator or, better yet, freeze it immediately? Where to keep your milk depends on when you need it. If you plan to breastfeed for the next three days, it is enough to keep it fresh in the refrigerator.
Tip from midwives Anja and Marie from the hallohebamme blog: “We recommend the refrigerator (4-6 ° Celsius) or the freezer (above -17 ° Celsius) for a long shelf life.”
Keep breast milk in the refrigerator.
Breast milk can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days without any problem. For this you can use different containers in which you can store your breast milk. Sealable glass jars and special bottles and bags for breast milk are best. Plastic containers or open storage are not recommended. If you are using breast milk bottles, you can pump the milk directly into the bottle. So avoid unnecessary spills.
Important: Where you store breast milk in the refrigerator is also important. In no case does it belong to the refrigerator door. The back of the refrigerator is best for this. When opening and closing the door, the temperature does not remain constant here, this reduces the service life. In the next part, you will find out how long breast milk can be kept at different temperatures.
