Why are old German names getting more and more popular?
Tradition arrives. Frauke Rüdebusch, research assistant at GfdS, explained where the trend towards old names comes from in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung:
“As soon as the names have not been assigned for a long time and thus become rare, they spark interest again: this is how you stand out from the crowd and are part of a tradition at the same time.”
This means that, like fashion and music trends, names make a regular comeback. Right now there are old German names like Grete, Ida or Anton.
What is important to parents when choosing a name?
According to a GfdS survey, which was conducted in collaboration with the Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy, aesthetic reasons are the most important factors when choosing a name for prospective parents. First of all, the first name should sound good. It is also interesting that a quarter of parents give their children the name of a specific person. Most often it is family members, especially grandparents themselves.
