Two parts of the “Harry Potter” prequels have already appeared, three are still pending. But what will happen after “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and “The Crimes of Grindelwald” in “Fantastic Beasts 3”?
The “Fantastic Animals” series, set several decades before the “Harry Potter” stories, is designed for a total of five films. The individual parts consequently end openly, the second chapter “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”, which was released in theaters in 2018, even freed viewers with a real twist on the timeout for the third part. And it will even be longer than expected. While initially it was planned to publish a “Tierwesen” film every two years, the start of production of “Fantastic Beasts 3” has been delayed so much that we will only see it a year later than expected, that is, in November 2021. But where will the magical journey go then?
Warning, spoilers for the first two parts of “Fantastic Beasts” follow!
From beasts to magic war
While in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” there was a stronger focus on magizoologist Newt Scamander’s (Eddie Redmayne) magical creatures, the fight against dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) continues with the first sequel at the latest. spotlight. And this line will probably be followed by the other sequels. Instead of an adventure story about Newt’s expeditions, we are presented with the great magical war instigated by Grindelwald. After all, not everyone wants to accept the fact that Grindelwald intends to subjugate ordinary people under the rule of wizards.
Newt himself will continue to play a central role in this. After always wanting to stay out of these conflicts, at the end of “The Crimes of Grindelwald” he saw what was at stake, especially over the loss of his childhood sweetheart, Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz). And her friends Tina (Katherine Waterston) and Jacob (Dan Fogler) have now become even more involved in the matter, as Tina’s sister and Jacobs’ great love Queenie (Alison Sudol) joined Grindelwald. Not only will Newt and company do everything in their power to stop Grindelwald, but they will also convince Queenie to stay away from the dark wizard. Also, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) is more dependent on Newt than ever …
Grindelwald vs. Dumbledore
The “Fantastic Animals” series is inevitably heading towards the duel between old friends Grindelwald and Dumbledore, which we will see as the climax of the fifth part. Before that, however, it is necessary to dissolve the blood pact that the two powerful wizards made in their youth and that prevents them from directly attacking each other. It is unclear how exactly Dumbledore attempts to do this. The fact that his former student and close confidant Newt has something to do with it clearly suggests the end of “The Crimes of Grindelwald”, when Dumbledore tells Newt about the secret of the pact.
Additionally, Dumbledore and his colleagues also have to deal with the dangerous Obscurial Credence (Ezra Miller), which Grindelwald likely used as the only effective weapon against Dumbledore. But that could prove extremely difficult after the performance at the end of “The Crimes of Grindelwald” …
Dumbledore’s family history
The creator of “Harry Potter” and screenwriter of “Fantastic Beasts”, JK Rowling, has already announced that she will provide many answers in “Fantastic Beasts 3”. These should especially affect Dumbledore’s family, Grindelwald Credence revealed in the predecessor that he is indeed Dumbledore’s forgotten brother, Aurelius Dumbledore.that was never mentioned before in the world of “Harry Potter”.
That could still turn out to be a lie and directed manipulation by Grindelwald, who wants to goad the supposedly abandoned brother against Dumbledore, but even then we should have a deeper insight into Dumbledore’s past in “Fantastic Beasts 3”. In part three, we were able to learn more about the accidental death of Dumbledore’s sister Ariana in a dispute between Grindelwald, Dumbledore, and their brother Aberforth, which led to the breakup between Grindelwald and Dumbledore in the first place.
Will Johnny Depp be reassigned?
However, Johnny Depp’s role as Gellert Grindelwald could be problematic for the future of the Fantastic Beasts series. Many fans dislike the fact that Depp, against whom his ex-wife Amber Heard has long brought allegations of mistreatment, is part of the “Harry Potter” world. – and supposedly some of the people in charge of Studio Warner feel the same, where they still don’t know exactly how to deal with it.
However, Warner doesn’t have much of a choice if the series continues as planned. Significantly reducing Grindelwald’s role in the story should hardly be possible due to the direction we have chosen. If the accusations against Depp get even tougher and the pressure on Warner mounts, it could well be considered a reorganization of the character. (even if we currently consider this highly unlikely). Some would even like Colin Farrell to return here, whose character Percival Graves Grindelwald was disguised in the first “Fantastic Beasts” movie.
Hogwarts, Brazil, Germany?
How it will eventually play out remains to be seen. It is already certain that after the USA and France in “Fantastic Beasts 3” he will return to a new country. According to the indications of JK Rowling, Brazil is very popular herewhere the local magic school is supposed to be a kind of temple in the middle of the jungle. Plus, according to set designer Stuart Craig, he could also go to Germany. In any case, it is already clear that there will be another detour to Hogwarts.
To save the long wait for the third part of the spinoff series, you can take a look at the first two several times. The Prelude “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” celebrates its free television premiere on Saturday 1st, Whit Monday at 8:15 pm.
